Fairfield County Ohio Historic Cemeteries

One of John Jungkurth's tombstone designsGravestone Art in Fairfield County, Ohio is world class quality. The image on the right is one of John Jungkurth's many ornate designs (from a gravestone rubbing of the same in the collection of Carol Swinehart).

Walking through many of the Fairfield County Cemeteries is like strolling through an art museum. For more information concerning Fairfield County Cemetery locations, enumerations or gravestone art see the following publications of the Fairfield County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society: Swinehart, Carol F. Gravestone Art: The Tombstone Cutters of Early Fairfield County, Ohio (out of print) and Guide to Cemetery Locations Fairfield County, Ohio (with township maps). There are also publications by the Fairfield County Chapter of OGS Publications that cover each of the 13 Townships in Fairfield County.

One of the most interesting cemeteries in the county is the

Stonewall Cemetery, 1816 Presidents' Cemetery

Stonewall Cemetery also know as Presidents CemeteryIn 1812, Nathaniel Wilson 11 received land from the general land office. The cemetery is along the edge of this property in Hocking Township. In order to preserve the cemetery, Nathaniel Wilson III deeded this land in trust to the Presidents of the United States. There are no presidents buried here. In 1838, a stonewall was erected around the cemetery. The wall was constructed without the use of mortar and it is considered one of the best examples of dry masonry in Ohio. Today, Stonewall Cemetery is owned by the Fairfield Historic County Parks.
